Date of Defense 1964-06-05 Availability restricted AbstractExperiments were conducted in the field, greenhouse, and controlled environment chamber to study single environmental factors and their interrelationship to ti11ering, growth, and carbohydrate content of orchardgrass. Several factorial treatment combinations were imposed on individual tillers from one orchardgrass genotype in four experiments.
1) Tillering and yield of orchardgrass were best under normal or rull light intensity. Reduced light intensity in Experiments I and IV lowered tillering by 73 and 26%, respectively. There was a marked increase in water soluble carbohydrates as light energy increased up to normal sunlight.
2) Tiller1ng and growth were very low at 50-60∘. as compared with 70-80∘ night-day temperature. There was a sharp increase in water soluble carbohydrates of the stubble with the low as compared with the higher temperature. Carbohydrate accumulation was low at the high temperature due to the rapid growth and tillering.
